PRE-CAMP | Day Two

Better late than never!

20130618_105655 Day 2 for our Pre-campers brought us to another story in the life of Moses. Today, we took some time to learn about how God called Moses from the burning bush to lead His children out of Egypt. We were reminded how God has called each of us to serve Him, too! We talked about how we are called to obey our parents and teachers, called to love our brothers and sisters, and most importantly, called to spread the Good News to all the world! Our memory verse for today was John 15:16 “You did not choose Me, but I choose you!” What a blessing we have to know that God has called His child and we have the privilege to serve Him!20130618_105858

Our morning continued with crafts, music, and recess. The craft for today was to make and decorate a marshmallow shooter. They turned out great and the campers are anxious to get a chance to play with their new toy.

20130618_105752

Recess brought on a new game with the 3rd and 4th graders — Spider Tag. Imagine three campers with their backs facing each other and arms linked. Throw in a few pool noodles and let them loose. We heard it was quite a funny show!

20130618_105819

Music is turning into a camper favorite. They can be heard chanting “MUSIC” in anticipation. They are continuing to work on their songs for Friday night and also a few fun action songs! Listening to your beautiful children praise our Savior through song is probably the highlight of my morning!

Today’s UTC was the much anticipated Angry Birds inspired challenge. Large boxes were stacked and the teams were armed with sling shots and tennis balls! Once everyone had a chance to shoot the tennis balls, we released the Kindergartners to knock over any remaining boxes! All of the teams were waiting for their turn were found cheering on the other teams. We love watching them encourage each other, even in the competitions!

After the boxes were all knocked down, we headed in for the final wrap up and then everyone was handed back to their parents for the day!

After daily calisthenics, we had a delicious breakfast consisting of “mancakes” (pancakes made by Tom), strawberries, and various cereals.

IMG_8766

We then continued our day with activities, ranging from archery to Extreme Bananagrams.

IMG_8822 IMG_8834 IMG_8851

Lunch came next. Taco salad! With a delicious side of pineapples.

IMG_9139

Then came…UTC!!!! Today’s UTC took place on the hill. Two slip and slides were set up with counselors hosing it down to make it supremely slippery. The campers had to stay on the tarps both down and uphill while carrying a stuffed animal and wearing a cowboy hat. And to make things worse, there was a flour-y surprise waiting for them at the bottom!

After UTC came, we all went to the Fairfax pool. Don’t worry – plenty of sunscreen was applied and water consumed!

Following pool time, there was a bit of downtime before supper. The cooks made us wraps and served veggie straws and fruits.

Music followed supper. Andrew and Lucas led us in song and praise.

Another round of “WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!” with Director Tom getting a cake in the face. Props to Miss Jenna Mielke for wearing her pig nose all day to win a free pass to cut to the front of the supper line for the rest of the week!

Our nightly activity was another UTC competition.

Three UTC teams were thrown together to make four larger teams. A huge field day festivity took place. Volleyball, archery, spoons, bocce ball, lightning, soccer, tennis, and pushing Joe’s truck were just a few of the events that were going on. To cap the festivities off, there was a huge tug of war duel.

IMG_9225 IMG_9231 IMG_9233 IMG_9235 IMG_9241 IMG_9248 IMG_9247

Discussion groups then met, rehashing the day’s events.

Off to the dorms for the younger campers.

The older campers continued with different discussion groups.
Off to bed!

See you tomorrow…

PRE-CAMP | Day One

IMG_8089

After getting all 44 pre-campers registered and snapping their mug shot, we headed into the Music Room to start out with our morning devotion. Sam Naumann introduced our group to theme for the week: Our Mighty God. We will be spending the week studying how God preserved and cared for Moses and how He does the same things for us!

IMG_8129

After devotion, we divided the campers up by grades and sent them out with their teacher. We have 5 grade levels: Miss Johanna has 9 Kindergarteners, Miss Katie has 7 1st graders, Miss Jennifer has 7 2ndgraders (all boys), Mr. Jake has 11 3rd graders, and Mr. Andrew has 10 4thgraders. Today each of the groups began our study of Moses by learning all about how God spared Moses’ life by having him saved from Pharoah’s demand that all baby boys be killed. We talked about how God spared Moses and how God did the same for us by sending His one and only Son, Jesus, to die and rise for US! We even worked on memorizing, John 3:16~ “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Once all the groups were finished with their Bible lessons, we spent time rotating each group through 3 different sessions. Music, led by Mr. Andrew and Miss Abby, was spent marching in the Lord’s Army and shouting that I AM A C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N! Crafts, led by Miss Hannah and Miss Lindsey, were spent making crowns and either a princess wand or a sword! Recess, led by Mr. Sam and Mr. Jake, was spent jumping the river, dodging the ball, and blowing (or popping) the bubbles!

IMG_8146 IMG_8150 IMG_8148 IMG_8276 IMG_8281 IMG_8280

Following our sessions, we made sure to refuel and refresh our tired (and sweaty) campers with animal crackers and fruit punch. Both of which were a huge hit for all.

Our last activity of the day was something new to our pre-camper program. One of our favorite parts about the full day camp is the UTCs (Ultimate Team Competitions). We decided that since our full day campers love it so much, we should share the love with our pre-campers. We divided our 44 pre-campers into 6 teams. Each team will get a chance to earn points throughout the week leaving us with a grand champion after our final steeplechase on Friday.

IMG_8329 IMG_8334 IMG_8342IMG_8348 IMG_8353 IMG_8351 IMG_8361 IMG_8362 IMG_8363

The UTC for today was dubbed “Counselor Bowling.” It was as much fun as it sounds. Each team member had a chance to roll the HUGE ball down our human bowling alley. The challenge: Knock down as many counselors as possible! Some of our best human bowlers just happened to be our Kindergarteners. They are stronger than they look! Not only did the pre-campers score points for their bowling, they also scored team flair – a glow-in-the-dark team colored wristband! Parents, be sure that your pre-campers wears their bracelet every day!

After our counselors were all knocked down and our campers were all tired out. We headed back into the classroom to review what we learned and then headed out to meet our parents! Day 1 = BLESSED!

It’s a Monday.

IMG_8412Monday morning started nice and early with calisthenics at 6:45. After a refreshing jog and some stretches to get us going for the day we headed down to a yummy breakfast of coffee cake, cereal, bananas and orange juice.

Chapel in the gym then we were off to our Religion classes. Each class is split up by grade and led by one or two counselors who have prepared lessons under direction from our Camp Pastor, Matt Hanel.

Morning activities brought everyone back to the gym to split off into their chosen session. Choices ranged from archery to arts and crafts. Kite flying to capture the flag. Slacklining, yoga and Sweatin’ to the Oldies with some 80’s inspired counselors leading the herd!

IMG_8171 IMG_8183 IMG_8187 IMG_8206 IMG_8207 IMG_8226 IMG_8235 IMG_8242 IMG_8245 IMG_8251 IMG_8256

Many of the campers and counselors favorite meal was served for lunch: meatballs with potatoes and a side of green beans, strawberries and bananas topped off such a delicious spread.

Free time before the first Ultimate Team Competition (UTC). All the campers were split up into 12 teams. Each team was assigned a counselor to lead them throughout the week. Everyone headed down to the softball field and they were all given several large stacks of cardboard boxes to create their own “Angry Bird” type structure. The wind made things tricky but each team rose to the challenge. After spending much time carefully and delicately constructing each tower, in true Camp fashion, each team then took to the slingshots to bring down their handiwork and even charged the rubble to finish the job.

IMG_8260 IMG_8312 IMG_8386 IMG_8412 IMG_8465 IMG_8519

First group was off to pool with the second group close behind. The hot sun got most everyone in the water and those daring enough took to the high dive. Pool time was enjoyed for a little over an hour before thunder cleared the waters. We headed back to Camp a little bit early and enjoyed some relaxing free time before a supper of tator tots, chicken sandwiches, veggies and jello.

Music (a camp favorite) is able to be held in the newly renovated Amphitheater this year. Thank you Leave It Better!

UTC Teams split up and scattered around the campus for nightly discussion group time. Then back to the gym for another round of “WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!”. This is a new thing at camp this year and so far it seems to be a hit! Campers enter a raffle by filling out a slip every day with questions related to camp. We come up with a wide assortment of prizes and the campers then have the choice of choosing that prize OR forfeiting that prize and risking it all for “WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!”

A round of ‘Happy Birthday’ for Mr. Sherman Kettner and birthday popsicles, thanks to a donation from his family.

It’s loud on the campus of Immanuel Lutheran this evening, you may have guessed it if you were driving by. BUNCO! It’s hard to explain just how loud and crazy it gets with 130 kids and counselors rolling dice and squealing with glee at each lucky roll. We thought we’d show you because you need to see this for yourself. It’s 100% insane and we LOVE it!

MONDAY PICTURES HERE!

Sunday is a fun day at camp.

IMG_7648

Yes, CAMP! It’s finally here and we don’t know if the counselors or campers are more excited! Registration opened at 2 with a flood of eager faces and smiles crowding the hallway waiting to check in. Campers got their room assignments and headed to the dorm to get settled in for the week.

IMG_7695IMG_7654IMG_7671

They then had their choice of activity. Some serious Ultimate Frisbee was happening down on the fields and mad volleyball skills were discovered in the sand volleyball court. Bocce balls were thrown and the lines were long as campers eagerly awaited for their turn on the Slackline.

IMG_7652

It was hot, so we kept them watered.

Supper consisted of hot dogs, apples, carrots, chips and beans. It was loud and crazy as old friends caught up and new friendships were made. Next, everyone assembled in the gym to meet the Staff, learn the rules and take a tour of the campus.

IMG_7742Back in the gym to mix and mingle. Animal noises filled the gym as pigs, cows, horses, dogs, cats, chickens, monkeys, sheep and ducks called out and searched for their kind. Followed by a tasty treat of rootbeer and ice cream.

To cap off a very eventful opening day, we consolidated in the gym to go over a few things before heading up to the dorms. Night! See you tomorrow…when the real fun begins!
